TRENT ALEXANDER-ARNOLD set to leave Liverpool after 20 years

Monday, May 5, 2025 - Trent Alexander-Arnold has officially announced he will leave Liverpool at the end of the season, bringing an end to his 20-year association with the club.

The 26-year-old defender will join Spanish giants Real Madrid on a free transfer after deciding not to renew his contract.
Alexander-Arnold, who joined Liverpool's academy at the age of six, has enjoyed a remarkable career with the Reds. He has won two Premier League titles, a Champions League, an FA Cup, two League Cups, the FIFA Club World Cup, and the UEFA Super Cup. A creative force at right-back, he holds the record for the most assists by a defender in a Premier League season.

In a heartfelt statement, Alexander-Arnold said:

“After 20 years at Liverpool Football Club, now is the time for me to confirm that I will be leaving at the end of the season. This is easily the hardest decision I’ve ever made in my life.

This club has been my whole world. From the Academy to the first team, the support and love I’ve felt from everyone inside and outside the club will stay with me forever. But I’ve never known anything else, and this decision is about stepping out of my comfort zone and embracing a new challenge.”

Under manager Arne Slot, Alexander-Arnold helped Liverpool secure another Premier League title this season, contributing six assists. Though he played a more conservative role, his influence remained critical to the team’s success.

Liverpool made a strong effort to retain the England international, with new sporting director Richard Hughes prioritizing his contract extension. Negotiations began last season and included an offer that would have made Alexander-Arnold the highest-paid right-back in Premier League history. However, the allure of a new chapter abroad proved irresistible.

He is expected to join forces with fellow England international Jude Bellingham at the Santiago Bernabéu, as Real Madrid undergo a transitional period. Former Liverpool star Xabi Alonso is tipped to take over from Carlo Ancelotti, making the move even more intriguing for Alexander-Arnold.
