Tuesday, May 26, 2026- The Sudanese army says it has captured the strategic Al-Baraka area near the Ethiopian border following intense clashes with the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces and allied rebel fighters in Blue Nile state.
Military officials announced that troops from the 4th Infantry Division secured the area on the outskirts of Al-Kurmuk after what they described as “decisive operations” that inflicted heavy losses on RSF forces and destroyed multiple military vehicles and equipment.
The battle marks another major escalation in Sudan’s widening civil war, particularly in regions close to Ethiopia where control has repeatedly shifted between the army and RSF-linked groups in recent months.
The area is considered strategically important because of its proximity to border routes and supply lines connecting conflict zones in southeastern Sudan. Analysts say the latest advance could strengthen the army’s position in Blue Nile state after weeks of intensified fighting and territorial competition near Al-Kurmuk.
The RSF has not officially responded to the army’s latest claims, though previous clashes in the region have triggered mass displacement and growing fears of wider regional instability.
Sudan’s conflict, which erupted in 2023, has already created one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises, with famine, displacement, and cross-border tensions continuing to spread. The renewed fighting near the Ethiopian frontier is expected to raise further concerns about security in an already volatile border region.
