Monday, June 8, 2026- At least 10 people have died after a migrant boat capsized in the central Mediterranean Sea, near the maritime area between Malta and the Italian coast, according to Italy’s coastguard.
Rescue teams recovered several bodies while continuing search operations for missing passengers, as survivors were brought to shore for urgent medical treatment.
The vessel is believed to have been carrying migrants attempting the dangerous sea crossing from North Africa toward Europe, a route that remains one of the deadliest migration corridors in the world.
Authorities say the boat encountered difficulty at sea before overturning, though the exact cause is still under investigation.
Italian and Maltese rescue services have intensified patrol and search efforts in the area, but officials warn that overcrowded and unseaworthy vessels continue to make such tragedies frequent.
The latest shipwreck adds to growing concerns over migrant safety in the Mediterranean, where thousands have died in similar incidents in recent years.
