Monday, August 10, 2026 - Antonio Banderas has revealed that a near-fatal heart attack in 2017 was the turning point that convinced him to leave the Hollywood lifestyle behind and return to his hometown of Málaga, Spain.
The 65-year-old actor said the health scare gave him a stark new perspective on life and forced him to reconsider the relentless pace of his career. Rather than continuing to chase the demands of Hollywood, Banderas decided to put his health, family and personal happiness first.
The actor said he had spent years moving from one film project to another, describing a life dominated by work, hotels and flights.
After surviving the heart attack, he quit smoking and began focusing more heavily on theatre and creative projects in Málaga, where he now runs the Teatro del Soho CaixaBank. Banderas has also embraced other ventures in his hometown and says he feels happier living a simpler life closer to his roots.
Banderas has made clear that leaving Hollywood was not a retreat from his career but a decision to change how he lived it. He still works internationally and continues to take on major acting roles, but Málaga has become his base and his priorities have shifted dramatically.
The heart attack, which he now describes as a profound wake-up call, ultimately pushed the star to stop taking life for granted and focus on experiences and relationships that matter most to him.
