Monday, August 10, 2026 - An Indian student accused of killing his 19-year-old girlfriend in Arizona has been arrested in Germany after allegedly fleeing the United States.
Varun Batchigari, 20, is accused of first-degree murder and kidnapping in connection with the death of University of Arizona student Julissa Rubi Salazar, who was found dead at her Tucson apartment on August 6. Police say evidence at the scene pointed to strangulation, and investigators quickly identified Batchigari as a suspect.
Authorities allege Batchigari left Tucson shortly after Salazar's death and travelled toward Germany while attempting to reach India. He was arrested after arriving in Germany in a coordinated operation involving US authorities, and he is now expected to face extradition proceedings to Arizona.
Investigators have also alleged that Salazar had been planning to end the relationship and had previously expressed concerns about Batchigari's behaviour. These remain allegations, and the case is still under investigation.
