Monday, August 10, 2026 - Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei has appointed veteran former Revolutionary Guards commander Mohsen Rezaee as his representative to the Supreme National Security Council, the country’s highest security decision-making body.
Rezaee has also been named the council’s new secretary, replacing Mohammad Bagher Zolghadr, in a major reshuffle announced as tensions remain high between Iran, the United States and Israel. The move puts one of Iran’s most experienced military figures at the centre of national security policy.
Rezaee, who commanded Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps for more than a decade, brings extensive military and political experience to the position.
His appointment comes at a particularly sensitive moment, with Iran facing continuing pressure over regional security and negotiations concerning the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz. Zolghadr, who held the security council post for only several months, has instead been appointed as a political adviser to the Supreme Leader.
The reshuffle is already drawing attention because of Rezaee’s close ties to Iran’s military establishment and his long record in national security affairs. Analysts say his elevation could strengthen the influence of the Revolutionary Guards within Iran’s security decision-making structure, although the government has not formally said that the appointment represents a change in policy.
With negotiations and regional tensions continuing, Rezaee’s new role could become an important indicator of how Tehran approaches its next security and foreign-policy decisions.
