Saturday, August 29, 2026 - Sweden is stepping up military support for Finland by deploying Gripen fighter jets and a corvette warship to help monitor and protect Finnish territory until at least the end of 2026.
The move follows a Finnish request to strengthen air defense as concerns grow over airspace incidents and military drones linked to the wider Russia-Ukraine conflict. Finland shares a 1,340-kilometre border with Russia, making surveillance of its territory a major security priority.
The Swedish deployment is designed to strengthen Finland’s ability to detect and respond to potential violations while allowing Finnish forces to focus on other threats. Swedish vessels will also provide capabilities against drones, while additional anti-drone systems could be supplied if needed.
The cooperation comes as Sweden and Finland deepen their defense coordination as NATO members and prepare for a more demanding security environment across the alliance’s northern flank.
The latest move sends a clear signal that Nordic countries are rapidly strengthening their defenses as security risks increase around NATO’s eastern and northern borders. Sweden is already leading NATO’s Forward Land Forces in Finland, with about 600 Swedish personnel assigned in 2026 and the capacity to increase that contribution to 1,200 if required.
With fighter aircraft, naval assets and ground forces increasingly integrated into regional defense planning, Finland’s border security is becoming a central part of NATO’s strategy in Northern Europe.
