Monday, September 21, 2026 - Iran has transferred 159 of its nationals from Iraqi prisons to serve the remainder of their sentences in Iran, according to the Iranian Justice Ministry.
The prisoners were transferred through the Shalamcheh border crossing under a bilateral agreement between Tehran and Baghdad that allows convicted nationals to complete their sentences in their home countries.
The transfer follows the return of another group of Iranian prisoners through the Mehran border crossing earlier in September.
Iranian officials said many of those transferred in the recent handovers had been detained over offences involving drugs, prohibited medicines or carrying packages for other people.
Authorities have urged Iranian travelers to comply with Iraqi laws and avoid transporting restricted substances or packages on behalf of others.
The latest repatriation highlights continued cooperation between Iran and Iraq on the transfer of convicted nationals.
The prisoners will remain under detention in Iranian facilities while completing their sentences, meaning the transfers change the location of imprisonment rather than ending the convictions or remaining terms.
