Tuesday, September 22, 2026 - Richard Hammond has publicly thanked the emergency workers who rescued him after the horrific crash that nearly claimed his life.
The former Top Gear presenter marked the 20th anniversary of the accident by recognising the paramedics, fire crews, air ambulance teams and medical staff who responded after his jet-powered car crashed at Elvington airfield in Yorkshire. Hammond was travelling at more than 300mph when a front tyre blew during filming.
Hammond recalled being trapped in the wreckage and later spending weeks in a coma after suffering serious head injuries. He said he is only able to reflect on the anniversary because of the people who pulled him from the shattered vehicle, transported him to hospital and treated him.
He also named members of the emergency and aftercare teams who played a role in his recovery, describing his gratitude as something that has remained with him for two decades.
The emotional tribute has put the focus not on the crash itself, but on the first responders whose actions gave Hammond a second chance. Now 56, the broadcaster said he would not have experienced his later career adventures or watched his two daughters grow up without their intervention.
His message serves as a timely reminder of the critical role emergency crews play when seconds can determine whether someone survives a life-threatening accident.
