JEFFREY ARCHER's sad admission days before 'sudden' death 'I knew my time was done'

Tuesday, October 6, 2026 - Jeffrey Archer made a poignant reflection on retirement just days before his sudden death at the age of 86. During a recent BBC Breakfast interview, the bestselling author discussed why Adam & Eve would be his final novel, saying he believed there was a right moment to step away.

He remarked that “the clever thing in life is when to get out,” while insisting he was not fully retiring. Archer died suddenly and peacefully at home on October 5, according to his publisher.

The timing has made his final comments particularly emotional for fans. Archer had remained remarkably active in his final days, appearing at the Leicester Square Theatre on October 4 to promote Adam & Eve and meet readers.

Broadcaster Gyles Brandreth said Archer was in “wonderful, ebullient form” during the event, making his death the following day especially shocking to those who had seen him recently.

Archer’s final novel is being published just one day after his death, giving the book an unexpected significance for millions of readers. The author sold more than 300 million books worldwide during a five-decade career, and Adam & Eve was intended as his closing work.

His final interviews now offer a striking glimpse of a writer who appeared to understand that his career was reaching its final chapter—even while continuing to work and engage with his audience until the end.
