Diver who helped save soccer team in Thailand holds out hope miners trapped in Laos cave are still alive

Thursday, May 28, 2026-A diver involved in the dramatic rescue of the Thai soccer team trapped in a cave in 2018 says he still believes miners trapped inside a flooded cave system in Laos could be found alive.

Rescue operations have intensified after heavy rains caused sudden flooding deep inside the remote mining area, cutting off escape routes and creating dangerous underground conditions. Emergency teams from neighboring countries are now working around the clock as families wait anxiously for updates.

The experienced diver warned that time is critical but stressed that survival in cave systems is still possible if trapped workers can access air pockets, clean water, and stable ground.

Authorities in Laos have deployed military rescue teams, engineers, and international cave specialists equipped with sonar devices and underwater drones to search the flooded tunnels. Weather conditions, however, continue to complicate operations as rising water levels slow rescue crews and increase the risk of further collapse.

The situation has captured international attention, especially because memories of the Thailand cave rescue remain strong across Asia and beyond. Experts say modern rescue technology has improved significantly since 2018, giving teams a better chance of locating survivors quickly.

Governments across the region are now under pressure to strengthen mining safety regulations and emergency response systems as concerns grow over worker protection in high-risk underground operations.
