Ukraine says its drones hit another refinery deep inside Russia as long-range strikes escalate

Thursday, May 21, 2026-Ukraine says it has carried out another long-range drone strike deep inside Russian territory, hitting a major oil refinery as its campaign against critical energy infrastructure continues to escalate.

Ukrainian officials claim the strike targeted facilities that support Russia’s military logistics and fuel supply chains, marking yet another example of Kyiv’s growing ability to project power far beyond the front lines. The operation reflects a sustained strategy aimed at disrupting Russia’s wartime economy by targeting energy production hubs deep inside the country.

Russian authorities confirmed a fire broke out at the refinery after the attack, though they reported that damage was being assessed and emergency crews had contained the situation.

Moscow has repeatedly accused Ukraine of escalating “terror-style” strikes on civilian-linked infrastructure, while Ukraine argues the facilities are legitimate military targets due to their role in sustaining Russia’s invasion effort. The repeated targeting of refineries has raised concerns about potential fuel disruptions and broader economic pressure inside Russia.

The escalation underscores how the conflict is increasingly shifting into a long-range technological war, with drones playing a central role in shaping battlefield dynamics far from the front lines.

Analysts say Ukraine’s expanding strike capability signals both innovation and desperation as it seeks leverage against a larger adversary. At the same time, the growing frequency of attacks inside Russia is raising the risk of further retaliation and widening instability, pushing the conflict into an even more unpredictable phase.
