China’s espionage tactics go digital as Western allies sound alarm

Thursday, June 4, 2026- A coordinated warning from the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and New Zealand has exposed an escalating espionage tactic: Chinese intelligence operatives are using LinkedIn and other job platforms to recruit Western government, military and security personnel.

According to the joint alert from the Five Eyes intelligence alliance, agents are creating fake recruiter and consultancy profiles on LinkedIn, Indeed, and Upwork to lure professionals with access to sensitive or classified information. Targets include defense analysts, security-clearance holders, think-tank researchers and other insiders whose knowledge could benefit Beijing’s strategic interests.

The recruitment process begins innocently, with seemingly legitimate job ads and interview requests, but quickly escalates into pressure for candidates to submit reports on defense policy, foreign relations or military strategy.

Officials say these reports, which can be worth thousands of dollars, are often followed by requests for increasingly sensitive insights, and conversations are moved to encrypted messaging platforms to avoid detection.

Western counterintelligence agencies describe the approach as a deliberate and increasingly “aggressive” intelligence campaign designed to exploit the professional networks of individuals who might hold valuable information.

LinkedIn has insisted that fake accounts and misrepresentation violate its terms of service and says it is actively combating state-sponsored abuse on its platform. However, the joint warning unusually broad in scope and tone reflects growing concern among Western allies about the sophistication and reach of digital espionage tactics.

China’s foreign ministry has rejected the allegations as “malicious slander,” but intelligence agencies maintain that these operations pose a real threat to national security and are urging professionals to be vigilant about unsolicited job offers from unknown recruiters online.
