Monday, June 8, 2026- Prime Minister Albin Kurti’s party, Albin Kurti’s Vetëvendosje Movement, has won the most votes in Kosovo’s early parliamentary election held on Sunday, according to preliminary results from official vote counts.
Early totals with most ballots counted show Vetëvendosje securing around 43 % of the vote, well ahead of its main rivals the Democratic Party of Kosovo with roughly 21 % and the Democratic League of Kosovo with about 18 % though all major parties remain below the threshold needed to elect a president or govern alone.
This election was the third snap parliamentary vote in 18 months, triggered by a prolonged political stalemate in which parties repeatedly failed to agree on leadership positions, including the presidency. Voter turnout was notably low, reflecting public frustration with ongoing instability.
Despite emerging as the largest party again, Vetëvendosje’s share of the vote has declined compared with previous polls, leaving Kurti without an outright majority in the 120-seat assembly.
As a result, he now faces coalition negotiations with other parties to form a functioning government and break the political deadlock so Kosovo can pursue stalled reforms and progress toward closer ties with the European Union and NATO.
