Japanese city suspends 94 schools after first-ever bear sighting

Monday, June 8, 2026- A city in central Japan has suspended all 94 public primary and middle schools after a bear was spotted inside urban areas for the first time, triggering widespread safety concerns and an urgent response from authorities.

The decision came after repeated sightings of a medium-sized black bear moving through residential neighborhoods, parks, and even areas close to schools, prompting officials to prioritize student safety over normal operations.

The bear was first seen near a park before reappearing multiple times across the city over the following days, including near densely populated zones.

Despite search efforts involving police units, hunters, and drones, the animal remains at large, increasing public anxiety and forcing authorities to issue strict warnings for residents to stay indoors and avoid confrontation.

The incident reflects a broader and growing trend of wildlife moving into Japanese urban areas, with experts linking the surge in sightings to food shortages in natural habitats and declining rural populations.

As encounters rise, local governments are increasingly resorting to emergency measures like school closures, signaling how quickly a single wildlife threat can disrupt entire city systems.
