Sunday, September 27, 2026 - Bangkok is facing a major flooding emergency after days of intense rainfall pushed authorities to declare all 50 districts disaster-affected areas.
Nearly 300 millimetres of rain fell in about 48 hours, flooding homes, roads and major transport routes across the Thai capital. The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration says the declaration is intended to speed up emergency response, assistance and coordination.
The impact is already significant. About 52,000 households in Bangkok have been affected, while thousands of residents have been moved into emergency shelters.
Authorities have warned people living near canals and in low-lying areas to move valuables and vehicles to higher ground, while motorists are being urged to avoid flood-hit roads.
The situation remains urgent as authorities work to drain floodwater and monitor canal levels. Bangkok schools operated by the city are scheduled to close on Monday, September 28, as officials assess safety and flooding conditions.
Thailand's cabinet has also approved special holidays for civil servants in Bangkok and three surrounding provinces on September 28 and 29 to reduce travel and traffic disruption.
