Saturday, September 25, 2026 - Two Israeli soldiers have been killed in northern Gaza after an explosive drone they were operating crashed at a military post and later detonated, according to the Israeli military.
The soldiers, reservists Nadav Kali, 24, and Ofek Moalem, 23, were inspecting the damaged drone when it exploded. Both were taken to Barzilai Medical Center in Ashkelon, where they were pronounced dead.
The incident occurred on Thursday during operations in northern Gaza. A preliminary military investigation found that the drone had crashed during takeoff after another drone had successfully completed its mission.
The soldiers approached the crashed device several minutes later, when it unexpectedly exploded. The military has described the incident as a serious safety event and launched an investigation into what caused the detonation.
In response, the Israeli military has temporarily grounded small drones capable of carrying explosive payloads while investigators examine the circumstances.
The deaths come as Israeli forces continue operations in parts of Gaza amid a fragile ceasefire, adding renewed attention to the risks facing troops even during incidents involving their own equipment.
