Israel's NETANYAHU vows major military operation, cordons off major West Bank city after attack

Sunday, October 25, 2026 - Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed a major military operation across the occupied West Bank after a shooting attack near Hebron killed two Israeli soldiers and left three others wounded.

The attack occurred on October 23, 2026, when two Palestinian gunmen opened fire near a road junction before being killed by Israeli forces. Netanyahu ordered the military to cordon off Hebron, restrict movement and prepare for a wider closure of the West Bank, raising fears of a significant escalation in the already tense region.

Israeli forces have since intensified operations around Hebron, carrying out arrests, searching homes and imposing restrictions on movement. Netanyahu said troops would enter neighbourhoods associated with the attackers, evacuate residents where ordered, seize weapons and dismantle what Israel describes as militant infrastructure.

The measures have disrupted daily life for Palestinian residents, with reports of families being displaced and checkpoints limiting access to work, medical care and essential services. Israeli officials say the operation is necessary to prevent further attacks, while critics warn that sweeping restrictions risk punishing civilians who were not involved in the shooting.

The unfolding operation threatens to deepen instability across the West Bank as Israel prepares for its October 27 election, with security a central campaign issue. Netanyahu has warned that the military campaign could expand beyond Hebron, describing plans for an operation on a scale not seen in decades.

Palestinian communities face growing uncertainty as restrictions and security raids continue, while international attention focuses on the risk of further violence. The immediate challenge will be preventing additional attacks while protecting civilians and ensuring access to essential services. Developments on the ground could determine whether the crisis remains concentrated around Hebron or spreads to other parts of the occupied territory.
