Libya opens gas field with output capacity of 50 million cubic feet per day

Monday, October 26, 2026 - Libya has taken a significant step toward strengthening its energy supply with the opening of the Al-Rashad natural gas field, located south of the eastern city of Brega.

Announced on October 25, 2026, by the National Oil Corporation (NOC), the field has a production capacity of up to 50 million cubic feet of gas per day. The development is expected to increase gas availability for power plants and industrial facilities as the country works to meet growing domestic energy demand.

The new field comes at a critical time for Libya, where natural gas plays a central role in electricity generation and industrial operations. The NOC estimates that the country produces approximately 2.4 billion cubic feet of natural gas daily, making the new field an additional source of supply for the national energy network.

Libya also exports natural gas to Europe through pipelines, giving increased production potential importance for both domestic energy security and regional energy markets. However, the announced capacity does not necessarily mean the field will immediately deliver its maximum daily output.

The priority now is to sustain production, improve infrastructure and ensure the additional gas reaches the power stations and industries that need it. If operations perform as expected, Al-Rashad could help ease supply pressures, support industrial activity and strengthen Libya’s energy sector.

The development also highlights the importance of continued investment in energy infrastructure as the country seeks to make better use of its natural resources. The next key measure will be how reliably the field delivers gas and contributes to meeting national demand.
