NETANYAHU invites India's MODI to Israel ceremony with Indian Flydubai pilot

Sunday, October 25, 2026 - Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has invited Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to participate in Israel’s Independence Day celebrations in May 2027, alongside Indian Flydubai captain Smit Machchhar, who survived a violent cockpit attack in September. The invitation was extended during a telephone conversation between the two leaders on October 22, 2026.

Netanyahu said he wanted Modi and the pilot to light a ceremonial torch at the event, recognising Machchhar’s actions during an incident that threatened the lives of everyone aboard the aircraft. The invitation has attracted international attention because the ceremony is traditionally associated with Israeli citizens.

Machchhar was seriously injured on September 30 when his Omani co-pilot allegedly attacked him aboard Flydubai flight FZ1073 travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv. Despite his injuries, the captain managed to open the cockpit door, allowing passengers and crew members to intervene and restrain the attacker.

The aircraft subsequently made an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia. Netanyahu had previously praised the pilot’s courage during a telephone call on October 3, describing him as a hero of India, Israel and the wider world. Indian officials also commended Machchhar for helping prevent a potentially catastrophic incident.

The invitation also underscores the close diplomatic relationship between India and Israel as both countries discuss security cooperation and developments across West Asia. Netanyahu said Modi welcomed the invitation and highlighted the countries’ shared commitment to combating terrorism. India’s official account of the conversation confirmed that the leaders discussed bilateral ties and the urgent need to restore regional peace and stability.

However, the invitation does not itself confirm Modi’s attendance, and Israel’s ceremonial torch-lighters are selected through an established government process. The proposed recognition of Machchhar places the pilot’s actions at the centre of a wider diplomatic moment, while the final arrangements for the ceremony remain subject to confirmation.
