Monday, June 8, 2026- A 5.6-magnitude earthquake struck Bhutan late on Sunday, with its epicentre located near Punakha and Thimphu, according to seismic data from international monitoring agencies.
The quake occurred at a shallow depth of about 10 km, which helped the shaking propagate widely across the Himalayan region.
Tremors were widely felt in neighbouring countries, including India, China, Nepal, and Bangladesh, prompting residents in cities and towns across these nations to rush outdoors as a precaution.
In parts of northeast India, such as Sikkim, West Bengal and Assam, people reported brief but noticeable shaking though authorities emphasized that the tremors were short-lived and there were no immediate reports of casualties or major structural damage.
Officials in Bhutan and neighbouring regions confirmed that initial assessments showed no serious injuries or property loss, and disaster response teams are continuing to monitor for aftershocks and any developing impacts.
Residents have been advised to remain alert and follow safety guidelines in case of further seismic activity.
