Dozens kidnapped in northwest Nigeria after bandits invite them to talks

Tuesday, June 9, 2026- Dozens of people have been abducted in northwestern Nigeria after armed groups reportedly lured residents into what was presented as a peace discussion, only to carry out a mass kidnapping.

The incident has intensified fears over the growing use of deceptive negotiation tactics by bandit groups operating across rural communities in the region.

Local accounts suggest villagers were called to meet armed men under the promise of dialogue aimed at reducing violence and resolving ongoing tensions.

Instead, the situation escalated into a coordinated abduction, adding to a pattern of mass kidnappings that have destabilized farming communities and forced many residents to abandon their homes and livelihoods.

Security agencies are now conducting search operations in nearby forested areas believed to be hideouts for the armed groups, while authorities face renewed pressure to address the worsening insecurity.

The latest attack underscores the fragile security environment in northwest Nigeria, where banditry, ransom kidnappings, and limited state presence continue to create a persistent humanitarian and safety crisis.
