Storm pounds New Zealand's capital city, cancelling flights and ferries

Tuesday, June 9, 2026- A powerful storm has swept through Wellington, bringing severe winds and heavy rain that disrupted transport networks and forced widespread cancellations across New Zealand’s capital.

Gusts battered the coastline and city center, leading authorities to issue weather warnings and advise residents to avoid unnecessary travel as conditions rapidly deteriorated.

Air and sea operations were hit hardest, with flights at Wellington International Airport delayed or cancelled due to dangerous crosswinds.

Ferry services across Cook Strait were also suspended as rough seas made crossings unsafe, stranding passengers and disrupting supply routes between the North and South Islands.

Emergency services reported scattered power outages and minor structural damage in exposed areas, particularly along the waterfront.

Meteorologists from MetService New Zealand warned that while the system is expected to move away in the coming days, lingering showers and strong winds could persist, keeping transport disruptions ongoing.

Authorities are urging residents to stay updated on weather alerts as cleanup operations begin and recovery efforts get underway across affected regions.
