Two schoolchildren and a male staff member have
been taken to hospital following the incident in Manchester
A 14-year-old girl has been arrested after three people were stabbed at
a school in Manchester on Tuesday morning.
Officers from Greater Manchester Police responded to the
incident at the Co-Op Academy on Plant Hill Road in Blackley.
A 14-year-old schoolgirl, a 14-year-old schoolboy and a 27-year-old male
staff member were taken to hospital following the attack.
The force has said that their injuries that are not believed to be
serious.
The teenage girl was arrested on suspicion of section 18
assault and
is being questioned in custody, and the force is not looking for anyone else in
connection with the incident.
The school was put in lockdown following this incident, with pictures from
the scene showing emergency services outside the school gates and on
the school premises.
A helicopter circled the vicinity as concerned parents and children
gathered outside.
Chief Inspector Jon Shilvock of the Greater Manchester Police said: “We
understand that this incident will have caused concern to pupils, staff and the
wider school community.
“The incident was swiftly and quickly dealt with by staff before officers
attended to arrest the girl. There is believed to be no wider threat at this
time and we thank everyone for their support as emergency services dealt with
this.
“We are not looking for anyone further in connection with this incident.
Officers will remain at the school and within the area to provide a visible
presence and community reassurance.”
The school’s headmaster Phill Quirk said that the academy would close for
the remainder of the day, according to the Mail.
A message sent to parents read: “You will be aware that there has been an
incident at Co-op Academy Manchester this morning.
“We can confirm that everyone is safe and the incident has been contained.
“However, we have made the decision to close the school for the remainder
of the day. We are speaking with parents and carers to obtain permission for
children to leave.
“If we haven't yet spoken with you, please contact your child through
their mobile phone or send an Arbor message.
“Once a member of staff has seen and verified this permission, students
will be allowed to leave the site.”
