Monday, November 2, 2026 - A 20-year-old pilot who earned her flying licence while still in high school has been identified as the co-pilot aboard a private jet that crashed in Florida, killing all nine people on board.
Nathalia Gadelha Filgueiras was serving as co-pilot of a Learjet 60 travelling from Austin, Texas, to the Bahamas when the aircraft crashed near West Palm Beach on Sunday, November 1, 2026. Her family confirmed her identity, revealing that she had achieved her private pilot's licence at just 17 while attending West Boca Raton Community High School.
Filgueiras had reportedly accumulated more than 1,300 flight hours and had been working as a commercial pilot for approximately nine months. Her aviation journey began with support from her father, who also had a passion for flying.
The aircraft encountered serious difficulties during the flight, with cockpit communications indicating ice accumulation and moderate turbulence before the pilots declared an emergency. The jet subsequently entered a rapid descent before crashing into a residential neighbourhood. All nine occupants, including passengers and crew, died in the disaster.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) are investigating the circumstances surrounding the tragedy. Investigators have indicated that parts of the aircraft may have broken away before impact, while weather conditions and the aircraft's mechanical performance are among the issues being examined.
The crash has renewed attention on aviation safety, emergency response procedures and the challenges pilots face when dealing with rapidly deteriorating flight conditions. For Filgueiras' family, the tragedy marks the devastating loss of a young woman whose passion for aviation had taken her from a high school training programme into professional flying.
